If you’re a photographer new to the wedding industry, you might be hoping to start second shooting weddings to get more comfortable with wedding days. Here are some tips to be the best second photographer you can be for your lead!
TIPS FOR SECOND SHOOTERS:
Know your camera gear. Always shoot in RAW, set your time/date to match your lead’s camera, make sure your settings are good to go by checking in and asking questions, and don’t expect your lead to have time to teach you how to use your camera or flash.
Know your role for the day. What does your lead need from you? Are you confident to get those shots on your own? BE HONEST and never agree to work a wedding if you’re not ready to capture certain moments without your lead present.
Get unique angles, creative shots, and candid guest photos. The lead is already capturing this wedding day and does not need copies of the same images from you. Take photos from a different angle, notice moments and capture them, grab candids, and ask groups of guests to smile for photos! This is most likely WHY the couple added on a second photographer in the first place.
Second shooting a wedding is NOT a mentorship opportunity. Be prepared and give your lead your very best work! That’s what they’re paying you for.
